Back in business

June 11, 2011

So I tried to salvage the old blog by upgrading.  The process reported no problems but the blog was nothing but a blank page.  I’d contemplated moving the blog up to WordPress before and now seemed as good a time as any.  Surprisingly, my exported data was able to be imported with no problems.  I doubt any pics I had still work but I haven’t come across one of those posts yet.

TODO:

Update RSS feeds from old location to new.

Get some plugins installed.

Moving shop

December 8, 2009

So it would seem that Shindo and I are the only ones who have noticed that floydwing.com is back.  The move was successful, if slightly delayed because of my oversight.  Stupid me didn’t realize that I needed to adjust the DNS servers for the site.  I assumed that having the site moved from one host to another would have that stuff updated.  Luckily, my new host has been very patient with and also a ton of help.  Thanks Dave!

Having root access is pretty cool and makes it a whole lot easier than using file managers.  Best of all, I can SSH in from the command line of my new work laptop.

I now have source control on more than just my local machine.  I’ve uploaded one of the projects I’ve been toying around with.  At some point I need to upload Pit.  Unfortunately my early attempts to convert my Visual Studio C++ project into a usable Eclipse CDT or Mono project hasn’t found must success.  I’ve been out of the C++ loop for a years, so I’m having a heck of time figuring out why these things are throwing strange errors.  Somewhere along the way, either in a past VS upgrade or my own insanity, I ended up with includes that weren’t the same case as the actual files (VS must have allowed that) and a very inconsistent file naming convention.  I’m a bit clueless how this came to be.  I know my coding was somewhat abysmal back then (maybe now?) but some of these things I just couldn’t see me doing.  VS seems to have been a bit too lax in what it allowed or how it upgraded.

So unless I can figure it out, I may be installing VS into my Win7 virtual machine.  YUCK!

If you can read this, I can whack my way out of a wet paper bag…

Or, it means that I’ve successfully migrated this blog and website away from tyranny.  I now have shell access along with a whole bunch of other cool things.  What does this mean for you?  Probably not much.  You probably won’t notice much of a difference.  I’ll continue to deliver you the same boredom you’ve come to expect.  See you in a few days.

Hosting move

November 12, 2009

I’m in the process of moving floydwing.com to a different hosting service.  I’ll give a heads up a few days before the DNS stuff happens.  In the meantime, if there’s anything you want saved on the forum, please copy it off.  I don’t know whether I’ll go to the trouble of salvaging the existing content and even if I’ll have a forum at the new site, at least first on.

Keep an eye on the blog for future updates.

Comments fixed

October 3, 2009

It came to my attention that comments were requiring a login, so effectively no one but me could comment.  That’s been fixed now.  Sorry if anyone had important things to say but were unable to.

Blog check

You know that it would be untrue
You know that I would be a liar

Light My Fire – The Doors

I noticed that a year ago I put out a short post about how many blogs I was currently subscribed to in Google Reader.  It was 93 back then.  Today…the count is 169.  I really need to do some cleaning.  Or I need to start organizing them within reader and have folders for those professional techy type posts separate from those other more whimsical types.

Blog Upgrade Headache

November 16, 2008

I hate computers.  I hate hardware.  I hate software.  One thing they seem to have in common, is that they can work one minute, and not the next.  The sudden change of my paragraphs not working is a great example of this delemma.  I hadn’t messed with the internal settings of the blog for months and all of a sudden I notice it won’t put paragraph breaks in.  The older posts were fine as long as I didn’t re-edit them and save, which would strip out the breaks.  Horribly upsetting.

So today I put a little time into upgrading the blog.  I noticed on my site’s admin console that I could let it upgrade it automatically.  I knew all my customizations would be blown away, but oh well.  I couldn’t remember what files I had customized and which I hadn’t.

The first wonderful upgrade problem I encountered was that the blog could no longer access the database.  I’d long ago forgotten the password, so I blasted the old account and created a new.  Then I noticed most of the plugins were no longer working.  Spent most of my upgrade time mucking around with those.  Deleted a few, figuring if I had need for them in the future, I’d refigure out how to set them up again.  Most important to me is the “On this day” and “Related post” functionality.  The “On this day” continued to work (or at least show up), but the “Related post” were gone because of the overlayed files.  I found a newer version that was supposed to magically work without editing any files.  So I downloaded that, blew away the old, and uploaded the new.  I finally got it appearing on single post views.  I refigured out to make it show up on the multi-post front page.  It’s supposed to show up via RSS also, but I’m not seeing it and am tired of mucking about.

All in all, it’s taken around 2 hours to get things back working, which isn’t real bad.  As soon as I post this, I’ll see whether I still have the paragraph break problem, which I shouldn’t!  If not, I’ll reedit the couple posts that it affected.  However, a new wonderful annoyance that I see is an accented capital A appearing in all my previous posts.  The upgrade had to do something to the database and indeed, that characters appears there when I look at the raw data.  So one more thing I’ll have to do some research in.  If anybody knows how to represent that character in a SQL script to remove it, let me know.

Update: The paragraph break hiccup appears to be fixed.  I’ll fix the other two posts shortly.  🙂

Another Update:  Sweet!  The related posts are now appearing in the RSS feed.  My searching has revealed nothing about the accented A character appearing.

Stupid blog

November 15, 2008

For some reason, this stupid blog is not honoring my paragraph breaks on the last couple of posts.  I apologize for the ugliness of that and will hopefully figure something out.

Unrelated ramblings to unload my mind

September 24, 2008

I’m really loving the little “Previously on this day” section of my blog.  It’s probably more entertaining for me than anyone else to see what I was complaining about on that day in years past.  I also like the related post entries at the bottom of posts on the main page.  Though sometimes I wonder about some of it’s “similarities”.  I wish more blogs that I read installed these features.  Of course, most of my reading is through Google Reader, so I wouldn’t see those things anyways.

One of those past posts mentioned that I was quitting watching Survivor.  And I’m proud to say I’ve been Survivor-free for 3 years.  I’m also thinking of giving up Heroes.  I watched their hour pre-premiere show the other night, hoping for a recap of what happened in the finale and it turned out to just be a hype-fest and just plain annoying.  From what I saw of the premiere, it’s not holding my interest anyway.

The show I’m most into right now is on BBC America and is called Primeval.  Love it!  It’s about these portals that are opening up between today and other parts of earth’s past.  Things make their way through and our heroes must find a way to contain the beasts and work at finding out why the portals are opening.  It’s good fun.

I’m a ton behind on my Stargate Atlantis and Dr. Who, but besides Primeval and Gordon Ramsey, I’m just not into TV at the moment.  Looking very forward to the NHL season starting.  Tonight’s the first pre-season game for the Wings.  I probably should check to see if they’d broadcast it, but I doubt it.

My team’s first soccer game is this Saturday.  We’ve got a pretty good team, finding where to have everyone play will be the challenge and making sure they all get a fair amount of time.

I once read what the difference between Categories and tags were on this blog.  But that knowledge escapes me.

Unfortunately I thought of something else I need to do around the premises.  I need to do some trimming of branches.  I should probably invest in one of those tall limb trimmers.  I’ve probably got enough trees around here to warrant it.

I forgot to mention a few weeks back that I unloaded our truck.  It was a good old beast but I just didn’t have a place for it up here, especially with needing to transfer title, insurance, and plates.  Luckily, someone bought it right before I’d need to worry about that.  NICE!

Almost there

July 17, 2008

The good news is we’re at least over half way through this blogging blackout.

The bad news is I still don’t have time to start putting out proper posts.
